After you apply for an ITIN and qualify for an ITIN, you could receive a letter from the IRS assigning your tax identification number in as early as seven weeks. However, the speed in which it takes to get an ITIN depends on the volume of inquiries the IRS receives — it can take nine to eleven weeks during busy times. The IRS issues an ITIN to people who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but don’t have (or are not eligible for) a Social Security Number (SSN). To apply for an ITIN, complete IRS Form W-7, IRS Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. This address is used to mail notices about your Form W-7, including notification of your assigned ITIN, and return your original supporting documentation. If you move before you receive your ITIN, notify us of your current mailing address immediately, so we may update our records. Your ITIN will expire (and the number deactivate) if you have not used it at least once in the last three years.

If an ITIN is applied for on or before the due date of a return (including extensions) and the IRS issues an ITIN as a result of the application, the IRS will consider the ITIN as issued on or before the due date of the return.
